Ship Security and Alert Systems: SSAS

Beam Communications was the first Iridium Value Added Manufacturer to release an approved Ship Security Alert System for the Iridium network. The new range of maritime satellite communication products combining both SSAS with voice and data services including Crew Calling provides a very cost-effective solutions for ship owners to meet the new International Maritime Organization (IMO) requirements for Ship Security and Alert Systems (SSAS).

SSAS Regulation

The SSAS regulations were adopted by the IMO to enhance maritime security in response to the increasing threat from terrorism and piracy. After July 1, 2004, most deep-sea passenger and cargo ships must be fitted with a device that can send an alert message containing the ship’s ID and position whenever the ship is under threat or has been compromised. The distress message must be activated covertly from a switch on the navigation bridge or other shipboard location, and transmitted only to the designated authority without being received on other ships or raising an alarm on the ship under attack.

Beam’s SSAS solution provides ship owners with a flexible array of choices to meet the IMO carriage requirements and flag administration specifications. Using the Iridium network, SSAS messages are routed directly to the designated authority specified by the flag state.

Multiple Alert Delivery Options

Iridium provides several options for sending SSAS messages through its global satellite network, using Short Burst Data (SBD), Short Messaging Service (SMS) or circuit switched data protocols, with calls routed through public switched telephone networks, virtual private networks or the Internet. The SSAS terminal can be programmed at installation, based on the ship owner’s service plan and flag requirements.

Multi Use Deployment

Beam offers a range of intelligent SSAS terminals that allow for deployment into various applications including that will enable simple standalone SSAS installation or alternatively high featured installation encompassing Crew Calling, Vessel Tracking and direct Internet connectivity at 10-12kbps.

The broad range of Beam communications satellite terminals allow users to make and receive voice calls from anywhere to anywhere in the world from standard phone equipment or robust intelligent handsets, simply, clearly and reliably anytime, anywhere. PBX/RJ11 Integrations

The Intelligent interface terminal of the RST100 Beam terminal enables the integration of the Crew Calling service to the ships PBX system if required, or alternatively the service can be accessed directly from a standard telephone in a Crew break room or other desired location. As the Beam RST100 supports long runs of standard copper telephone wire, multiple extensions can be connected to the terminal over great distances.

Global Coverage

The Iridium Satellite network provides a robust network for supporting a global tracking application, with global coverage from pole to pole and the use of low powered antennas that are omni directional this makes a Beam TrackALERT system your desired installation for any application.

Data Services

All Beam terminals support all of the Iridium Data services available. This then provides a flexible means by which to communicate using one or more of the following protocols; Circuit Switched Data, Short Message Service, Direct Internet and Short Burst Data.

Global Coverage

The Iridium Satellite network provides a robust network for supporting a global tracking application, with global coverage from pole to pole and the use of low powered antennas that are omni directional this makes a Beam TrackALERT system your desired installation for any application.

Voice Services

Whilst all data services are available on any Beam device, selected Beam terminals offer varying voice service features. Any voice supported terminal will allow the use of an Intelligent Handset, however the Beam Remote Satellite Terminal, RST100, allows the use of standard phone equipment through its intelligent RJ11 connectivity. This means that standard cordless, corded or PBX systems can be integrated for voice communications on this terminal.

Intelligent Handset

The Beam Intelligent Handset, RST970, is an ideal accessory for voice and SMS communications. The handset is compact, lightweight, easy to install and comes complete with hang-up cup and mounting brackets. The handset has a built in ringer, supports full SMS functionality as well as an easy menu system to access phone settings. The Intelligent handset is included in an In-Vehicle Telephone Kit as well as the Beam RST973 In-vehicle accessory kit.

Hands-free Interface

When using the Hands-free Interface (HFI), included with the RST620 or as an accessory with the other terminals this provides high quality, full duplex, and hands-free voice communications. Other key features of the HFI include; Horn Alert Radio Integration Radio Mute. The intelligent handset can be easily removed from its cradle if a private conversation is required.

TrackALERT Interface:

The Beam TrackALERT terminals are an intelligent Alert / Tracking and Monitoring unit all in one and are available for all Beam communication terminals. TrackALERT allows the deployment of various applications, including vehicle, asset, and or asset tracking, monitoring and condition reporting as well as remote control and configuration. Alert/Alarm monitoring applications can also be simply deployed.

The TrackALERT interface is highly intelligent and the ability to configure many parameters in the terminal locally or remotely enables a great deal of customization and flexibility.

For detailed information on the Beam TrackALERT terminals see TrackALERT brochure for detailed information.

Power Input

The Beam terminals support 11-32V DC power input. An AC plug-pack is supplied with all terminals, which therefore makes it very easy to connect to mains or DC power. The use of an RST050 Beam Battery Back-up is also an ideal accessory where communication needs to be guaranteed.

Connection of Other Equipment/Devices

Beam terminals will support the connection of a third party device through the DB9 Data connection, enabling Data Loggers, Meter Readers and other terminal devices to be easily connected to Satellite Communications. Beam terminals generally supports engine management type monitoring devices to enable communication through the satellite network via SMS, SBD or circuit switched data.

Remote Diagnostics

Using SMS or SBD with the intelligence built into the Beam RST100 and RST200 terminals it is possible to remotely configure the communication terminal as well, run diagnostic checks, check signal strength, temperature and call logs as well as the ability to have automated reporting for “still alive” reporting if required. It is also possible to perform some simple polling of a device plugged into the Log Port of the terminal. This can be a very cost effective means of low-level position and condition reporting.

Typical Crew Calling Installation:

Crew Calling applications can be installed in conjunction with an SSAS or Vessel Monitoring installation very simply. The Crew Calling installation is typically best managed using standard telephone equipment, which requires the Intelligent Beam Remote Satellite Terminal RST100. This terminal has the RJ11 socket for the connection of standard phone equipment or integration into a PBX system where required for multipoint access. Multiple handsets can also be connected to the base RST100 terminal as per the below diagram.

The Crew Calling handset and a Captains handset can run in parallel if required or alternatively two separate units could be run depending on the number of crew on the anticipated usage on board the vessel. The Captains Intelligent handset always has priority over the Crew phone and the Captain can terminate the current call if required in an emergency.

Antenna Selection

Whilst the installation and integration to the terminal is very straight forward, selecting the appropriate antenna and antenna cable for the installation is also important to ensure greatest call quality over the satellite network. There is a range of suitable antenna installation types for various applications. In order to maximize the signal penetration in some locations the antenna can be installed some distances away from the main terminal in a more appropriate location.

The antenna should always have as clear line of sight to the sky as possible, eight degrees above the horizon is always ideal, however the clearer the view to the sky the greater the reliability of service.

Typical SSAS Installation:

The below diagram depicts a typical SSAS Installation on board a vessel. As you can see from the installation option there is the ability using the RST100 to support standard phone equipment in the installation for Crew Calling or flexible cordless handsets anywhere on the vessel. The terminal supports up to 500 metres, 1500 feet, per alarm loop. As the loops are constantly monitored this provides extra security and will raise an alert I the even the cable is cut

The GPs inputs vary depending on the terminal chosen for the installation. When using the RST035 TrackALERT this will support either the Garmin Smart GPS antenna, which allows long lengths of data cable to run to the terminal, or the ships NMEA input. On the RST030 TrackALERT an active or passive standard GPS antenna can be used or the NMEA input form the ship

In the installation configuration below the Beam Battery Backup, RST050 has also been incorporated into this installation to give absolute peace of mind and security.
